Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from the last 5, 10 and 15 years. It’s always proved to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

9 March 2019– Northern Premier Division : Hull 54-5 Lymm

Hull were confirmed as champions and earned their 21st straight win with a 54-5 victory over Lymm. Ben Boothman opened the scoring with Simon Humberstone adding the conversion. On 14 minutes Stephen Hihetah increased the lead with an unconverted try and in the 28th minute Lee Birch raced past a despairing defence for another try converted by Humberstone. Mike Adlard found space to touch down in the 36th minute for another try converted by Humberstone and from the kick off Hihetah raced through for a try near the posts that Humberstone converted for a 33-0 half time lead.

Mike Adlard scored his second try on 60 minutes again converted by Humberstone. Moments later Liam Regardsoe was yellow carded for a high tackle and Lymm took advantage to score an unconverted try after 66 minutes. 8 March 2014 – National Two North : Sedgley Park 32-30 Hull

Hull travelled to Sedgley Park full of confidence after the previous week’s performance and victory and gave the fourth placed side a tremendous game but suffered late agony with a missed penalty attempt to win the game with the final kick of the match. Hull started well and a 4th minute penalty from James Cameron opened the scoring. However the hosts responded with an unconverted try and two penalties to lead 11-3 before a long range penalty from Richard Hayes followed by a James Cameron penalty put Hull within two points of their hosts.

It got better for Hull when Hayes scored an excellent try under the posts which was converted by Cameron for a 16-11 half time lead. Sedgley scored a converted try early into the second half and then repeated the feat to leave Hull nine points adrift going into the last quarter. Hayes scored another fine try converted by Cameron but with 15 minutes to go Sedgley Park extended their lead to 32-23 with a converted try. Hull hit back again with Max Argyle scoring and the conversion from Cameron set up a frantic finale. As the final whistle approached Sedgley’s desperate defending yielded a penalty to Hull but Cameron’s kick sailed just wide and the hosts held on for the win.

Prop Makoni Finau landed the first points of the afternoon with an unconverted try after 11 minutes before a Morley penalty closed the gap. James Cameron put Hull into a 8-3 half time lead with a 35th minute penalty. On 61 minutes another Cameron penalty put Hull 11-3 ahead before captain Chris Murphy was yellow carded on 66 minutes.

However Morley couldn’t take advantage as Hull’s director of rugby Tevita Vaikona latched onto a short pass from Cameron to step, swerve and blast his way past four defenders to score a marvellous try in the 70th minute which Cameron converted for an 18-3 lead. Murphy returned but almost immediately Hull lost second row Dan Cook for a high tackle but held out until added time when Morley scored an unconverted try in the corner to end the scoring.
