Former player Greg Lound reminisces about his time playing for the club.
I can still remember the cold, frosty Sunday mornings down at Haworth Park as an 7/8-year-old! It has been quite a journey from there to playing 1st XV rugby at YPI, with Hull RUFC.
Back at Haworth Park, I can remember watching the games and looking up to the first XV players like Guy Martinson, Danny Smith, Leroy McKenzie and later with Dan Cook and Chris Murphy when they signed for the club.
It was always an aspiration of mine to play with players like them. Dan Cook played a big role in my rugby development, as my Colts coach. He really helped me understand what it took to play senior rugby, when we came up against Beverley in the Yorkshire Cup.
I was just 17 at the time and was finally playing with those players, who I had looked up to as a youngster. It was definitely an eye opener, playing senior rugby at such a young age and I am very thankful to the coaches who trusted me to play.
The following five seasons were great and involved creating a lot of memories, both on and off the pitch! During my time with Hull, I learnt a huge amount from playing alongside players such as Ollie Cook, Rob Devonshire, Scott Plevey in the forwards and Dan & Matty White, James Cameron, Maea David and Lee Radford in the backs to name a few. There were many more!
Looking back at this team, it is hard to believe we didn’t manage to gain promotion at the time, although we did get very close. In a strange twist of fate, it was Dan Cook, my Colts coach, who was the Team Manager at England Counties, who was able to present me my shirt. A very surreal moment.
More recently, it has been great to come back and watch a few games at Chants Ave, catching up with everyone at the club and it has been great to see the success the club has achieved.
