What a 24 hours it turned out to be for centre Harry Dawkins. On Friday night he received a message from assistant coach Tony Penn informing him he was in the squad for Saturday’s trip to Billingham. Dawkins hadn’t trained with the team and only met his colleagues for the first time when he arrived at the ground. The Bishop Burton centre didn’t let any of that stop him from playing a crucial part in a 30-24 win which consolidated eighth spot in National 2 North. The 18-year-old explains how he took everything in his stride, including scoring the fifth and decisive try in a crucial win.
“I found out I was going to be be playing when Tony gave me a message on the Friday night,” Dawkins said.
“I have never trained with the boys my first time meeting them and playing with them was before the game.
”I learnt everyone’s name before we went out and did the warm up.
“The try came of a great team effort drawing the oppostion in with good forward carries.
“Then it got shipped wide and I put it in the corner.
“Scoring on my debut was great and it meant alot that I could contribute to a great result for the team.
“The pace of the game I was used to being in more in the Ace League and Yorkshire Academy.
“But the physical side was ramped up and I enjoy the new physical challenge.
“It was a lot bigger than playing for Bishop Burton but I enjoy the challenge.”
