Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from the last 5, 10 and 15 years. It’s always proved to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

16 February 2019 – Northern Premier Division :  Alnwick 8-26 Hull
Hull stretched their unbeaten run to 19 games scoring four tries to one to overcome their hosts. It took 32 minutes before Alnwick opened the scoring with a 40 yard penalty but only 3 minutes later Joe Stafford blasted his way to the line to put Hull 5-3 ahead at the break. The second half saw Hull take control of the game and a penalty try after 49 minutes saw Hull extend their lead to 12-3.

After 64 minutes Harvey Harding scored from a five yard scrum with Simon Humberstone adding the conversion for a 19-3 lead. When an Alnwick handling move broke down Cameron Curry picked up the loose ball and sprinted to the line for Hull’s fourth try, Humberstone’s conversion stretching Hull’s lead to 26-3. Alnwick managed a late consolation try but another Hull victory kept their commanding league at the top of the table.

14 February 2009 – North One : Birkenhead Park 13-7 Hull
On a very heavy pitch two very evenly matched sides produced an absorbing match. Determined defensive work by both teams resulted in a scoreless first half and the pattern continued into the second half before all the scoring happened in the final 13 minutes. The hosts opened the scoring with a 66th minute 30 yard penalty and six minutes later Hull were penalised again for offside and from 32 yards out and 5 yards in from the touchline Park doubled the advantage.

Hull pressed forward and Tongan prop Makoni Finau crashed over for a try, James Cameron adding the conversion. Two minutes later the Park scrum half touched down for a converted try to put the hosts 13-7 ahead. In the final few minutes Hull put enormous pressure on the home side and in the dying seconds scrum half Matt White dived over only for referee Simon Lazenby to disallow the try for a knock-on.
