Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from the last 5, 10 and 15 years. It’s always proved to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

9 February 2019 – Northern Premier Division: Hull 97-0 Vale of Lune

Hull ran in 15 tries to demolish Vale of Lune and remain top of the table. Under strength Lune had no answer to Hull’s driving forward play, half back organisation, quick handling and clinical finishing. Hull scored eight tries in the first half – three from Mike Adlard, two from Stephen Hihetah and one each from Tom O’Donnell, Keane Naylor and Steve Johnson – with all eight converted by Simon Humberstone for a 56-0 half time score.

The second half was much the same and within seven minutes of the re-start Hull had scored two more tries through Stephen Hihetah and Tom O’Donnell. It was not until the final seventeen minutes that Hull scored a further five tries. Ali Heard and Stephen Hihetah scored two apiece and Mike Adlard also went over. Simon Humberstone’s three second half conversions saw Hull resounding winners.

8 February 2014 – National Two North : Hull 33-26 Caldy

Hull gave their hopes of avoiding relegation a huge boost with this win over Caldy. Within the first ten minutes Caldy had scored two tries , one converted, before Ben Thoy scored an unconverted try for Hull in the corner in the 23rd minute. It remained 12-5 to Caldy at half time. Hull drew level in the 42nd minute when Jamie Barnard scored in the corner and Greg Lound landed a fine conversion. Hull took control of the game in the 54th and 56th minute.

A try from Phil Murphy was followed two minutes later by Dominic Lespierre being fouled as he was about to score and resulted in the referee awarding a penalty try. Lound converted both and Hull led 26-12. Caldy replied with a converted try before Joe Stafford rounded off a fine display with a try in the 65th minute duly converted by Lound.
