Memory Lane By Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from the last 5, 10 and 15 years. It’s always proved to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

11 January 2014 – National Two North : Hull 37-13 Bromsgrove

Hull eased their relegation fears with a superb home win over fellow drop rivals Bromsgrove thanks to a Ben Sullivan hat trick. Hull started brightly and took the lead after only 6 minutes with a try from Sullivan, duly converted by James Cameron.

Bromsgrove responded with a try on 11 minutes and following a yellow card for Hull scrum half William Haddow the visitors took advantage of the extra man to score again although both conversion attempts were missed. Hull drew level on 26 minutes with a penalty from James Cameron to bring up his personal milestone of 100 points for the season.

Six minutes later winger Ben Thoy scored under the posts for a try converted by Cameron before on the stroke of half time Cameron slotted over another penalty to give Hull a 20-10 lead at the break. The second half was only 4 minutes old when full back Jamie Barnard raced over for an unconverted try before Bromsgrove replied with a penalty kick. Two late tries from Sullivan, one conversion missed and one superb touchline conversion from Cameron gave Hull a healthy winning margin as they moved out of the bottom three.
