Alec Renouf says that having Charlie Beech in the team is a massive boost for the team as they start the second half of the season on Saturday with a trip to Fylde. It’s a rearranged game after the game was postponed last month because of the inclement weather. It’s the first game since beating Hull Ionians 23-18 at Brantingham Park which was won in dramatic fashion with David Davison scoring in the right hand corner. The score would not have happened had it not been for a clever lineout which saw Beech take the short lineout and power his way towards the line. Renouf was at close hand to see what the experienced prop did and said he was the perfect player to have in that situation.
“Charlie has done that everywhere he has played,” Renouf said.
“He’s a veteran player and they are the players you want in those situations.
“To have a calm head and when he took off like he did, that’s when I knew we’d do it.
“It’s hard to put into words what happened in the final minute. That was my first derby, but hopefully plenty more to come. That was quality.
“A lot of our jumpers in the lineout went down injured, and I thought we had to come up with something special at the end.
“A lot of it was a blur, but I thought it was never in doubt. I knew we were going to win it at the end.
“We were building to that. Training was amazing and the message before the game was to stick together.
“When we were under the sticks, we kept telling ourselves, the game wasn’t over.”
