At the end of the 2022/23 season, our club historian Norman Angell stood down from his role. Before he did, he handed the reigns over to our new club historian Stephen Hodgson. Each week, Stephen will delve into the club’s history books to provide a trip down memory lane from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. Do you feature this week?
15 December 2018 – Northern Premier Division : Wirral 3-40
Hull went into the Christmas break top of the table after a convincing win at Wirral. An early penalty for the hosts after just five minutes proved to be their only score of the afternoon. Scrum half Rob Watts put winger Stephen Hihetah in for Hull’s first try and four minutes later Paul Hamber broke from a line out and No8 Joe Stafford was on hand to drive over for Hull’s second try which Simon Humberstone converted for a 12-3 half time lead.
Five minutes into the second half Hull were awarded a penalty try as Wirral illegally disrupted a scrum on their own line and they repeated the indiscretion on 65 minutes to ensure a try bonus point for Hull. Substitute Steve Johnson crashed over on 75 minutes for another try, converted by Humberstone, and three minutes later a spectacular score from Rob Watts resulted in Hull’s final try. Simon Humberstone’s conversion made it 40-3 to consolidate Hull’s position with a nine point margin at the top of the table.

14 December 2013 – National Two North : Hull 12-3 Otley
Hull picked up a vital win over Otley but the result was marred by a serious injury to Ben Dorrington who sustained a suspected dislocated elbow just before half time which resulted in the game being held up for 25 minutes. With no score on the board the second half started in moderate light before Otley landed a 40 yard penalty to lead 3-0.
In the gathering gloom James Cameron kicked a cross field ball straight into the hands of Jamie Kirk to round his marker and score a fine try. The conversion was missed but 10 minutes later Hull scored again when Joe Stafford went over and Cameron’s conversion ensured Hull gained their second home win of the season and moved out of the bottom three. Sean Hay suffered a broken arm in the match to join Ben Dorrington in Hull Royal Infirmary.

Westoe scored an unconverted try before Cameron kicked another penalty and two further Westoe penalties gave the hosts a 14-11 half time lead.
Westoe scored early in the second half and Cameron closed the gap with another penalty but when Hull lost Rob Devonshire to a yellow card Westoe stretched their lead to 26-14 and chasing the match Hull conceded two converted tries in between Alex Piercy scoring an unconverted try to move Westoe top of North One .
