Wharfedale Bring Unbeaten Run To An End

Hull were well beaten by a side full of inventiveness who showed speed of thought and pace on the ball. Hull were well below par and were out played in every department.

The early exchanges did not indicate what was to come as Hull started by making good ground when driving forward and an early penalty by Wharfedale’s off half Sam Gaudie was soon matched by Hull’s off half Reece Dean after 12 minutes.

It was after 15 minutes that  the alarm bells started to ring for Hull as the home sides scrum half Oliver Riddiough scythed through a flat footed Hull defence to put his winger Oscar Canny in for a try under the post converted by Gaudie.

Five minutes later a good catch and drive allowed Wharfedale’s back rower Jack Pinder to peel off the mall and go in unopposed for an unconverted try. An exchange of penalties saw the halftime score 18-6 in the home sides favour with Hull having had little ball not helped by losing the penalty count 6-3.

Hopes of a second period recovery for the visitors did not materialise. At the restart Wharfedale quickly asserted themselves in Hull’s ‘twenty two metre area ’22’ and when centre Oliver Cicognini took a good line of running he bundled through three tackles to score near the posts with Gaudie landing the conversion.

Hull were having trouble keeping hold of the ball and mistakes were conceding possession and distance. It was no surprise when Wharfedale’s substitute centre Tom Beresford took another good angle to run in a good  try converted by Gaudie to see Hull in trouble at 32-6 after 53 minutes. A penalty by Gaudie after 59 minutes  saw the home side leading 35-6 and in complete control.

Hull’s day was summed up when late on winger Peter Hudson-Kowalewicz latched on to dropped ball deep in his own half kick ahead and outpace the defence only to see the ball roll into touch a few yards short of the try line. The final score did not flatter Wharfedale and Hull will need to bounce back next week after a difficult afternoon.
