Round seven of the season provided three Yorkshire County derbies, the first of which saw Huddersfield entertain Sheffield Tigers and the Tigers showed their teeth as they roared into a 28-13 interval lead, securing the try bonus point within 35 minutes. Huddersfield played better in the second half and restricted the Tigers to just one more try, whilst scoring a couple themselves. The final score was 44-25 leaving Huddersfield firmly rooted at the bottom of the table with just one win from their seven games. The Man-of-the-Match was the Tigers back-rower Josh Redfern.
Hull Ionians and Wharfedale put on a very entertaining game at Brantingham Park where the third-placed Dalesmen were beaten for only the second time this season. Hull Ionians dominated the first, scoring five tries for an interval lead of 26-6, but Wharfe upped their game in the second period, scoring three tries for a final score of 36-23. Ionians will be very relieved to have halted a four-game run of defeats with this much improved display. There was no Man-of-the-Match mentioned in the report.
The third derby saw Sheffield RUFC compete very well in the first half against visitors Rotherham Titans turning round just 13-7 in arrears. The second half belonged to the Titans who added three more tries to their first half one to post a convincing 37-17 away win. Former Hull prop Loma Kivalu scored a try during the second period while the Man-of-the-Match was Richard Hayes of the Titans.
In the only Roses match of the day league leaders Leeds Tykes maintained their 100% playing record with a big 53-21 win at Preston Grasshoppers after leading 29-14 at the break. The Tykes were in rampant form and scored nine tries with just four conversions. The Tykes left winger Harry Jukes scored four tries within the space of 25 minutes and not surprisingly was voted Man-of-the-Match for his contribution.
Hull RUFC posted a very good 40-24 home win over new boys Billingham after turning round 26-10 ahead at the interval. Billingham came out strongly for the second period and gave Hull several anxious moments with some very determined forward play which the home pack did very well to contain, although Billingham did score two more tries before Hull pulled away again. The Hull left-winger Peter Hudson-Kowalevicz scored three excellent tries, the last one being a well-controlled kick and chase effort over 90 metres, which earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. Hull fly-half Reece Dean scored a try to add to his five conversions and is now the second highest points scorer in the Division on 84 points, ten behind Richard Hayes of Rotherham on 94.
In a very high-scoring clash between basement clubs Otley and Lymm, which Otley won by 45-34 after leading 31-17 at the break, the home side ran in five first-half tries, adding two more in the second period. Five of these tries were converted enabling Otley to lift themselves out of the bottom three for the first time this season. This will no doubt have given the Cross Green supporters something to shout about and the players themselves will take great heart from the result. The Otley full-back Ben Dinsdale won the Man-of-the- Match award.
The final game in the Round was at Fylde, where the home side were beaten 34-28 by Tynedale, who also climbed out of the bottom three in the table. Tyne led by 22-15 at the interval after scoring four tries and were able to make it back to back wins. Their back-rower Henry Wainwright won the Man-of-the-Match award. This was Fylde’s fourth consecutive defeat, which is bad news for a side expected to be one of the more prominent side in the division by many clubs. They took some consolation from obtaining both bonus points on offer and no doubt will soon rise up the table.
All of these results show no change at the top of the table with Leeds Tykes on 35 points and Rotherham Titans on 33 followed by Wharfedale on 23. Hull RUFC moved from sixth to fourth on 22 points with Billingham doing exactly the reverse after their defeat at the Ferens Ground.
In the nether regions the bottom three clubs are Preston on 13, Lymm on 13 and Huddersfield on 6 points.
