For the second home game in a row, Peter Hudson-Kowalewicz found himself centre of attention in the last minute of a close game. A fortnight ago, the Sheffield Tigers were attacking Hull’s try line, when the winger pulled off a crucial tackle that helped secure a 24-18 win. On Saturday, in the final minute, Billingham were on the charge looking to score a try that would have given them two bonus points – one for losing by seven points or less, and one for scoring four tries.
However, a jarring tackle released the ball and on hand to kick the ball away to safety was Hudson-Kowalewicz. The back followed the ball and the bounce allowed Hudson-Kowalewicz to kick further down field. Another kick landed inside the ’22’ and despite being chased by a Billingham defender, the Hull man judged his fourth kick to perfection to fall on it to score and complete his hat-trick and seal the club’s 400th win. It was the club’s first hat-trick since Mike Adlard scored three times in a 48-5 home win over Stourbridge on 8 January, 2022. So how did that final play unfold in the mind of Hudson-Kowalewicz?
“It was like I was doing it all in slow motion,” Hudson-Kowalewicz said.
“I was glad it worked and we could finish the game on a high.
“Big moments like that come from practice, patience and having the trust from the boys to make those plays.
“It was amazing to score a hat-trick.
“It was enjoyable and great to win at home again.
“Also, it was good to finish this first group of games on a high and hopefully continue this momentum into the next games and build on this win when we return to action.”
