As the team prepare to travel to Preston Grasshoppers this weekend, it might surprise a lot of people to discover who the leading try scorer is. Is it a winger, using their speed to carve through the opposition defence? Or is it a back row forward capitalising on the power of the scrum to finish off a push over try? It’s neither. Charlie Beech has scored three times this season, including two in last week’s thrilling 24-18 win over Sheffield Tigers at Chants Ave. And those two tries took some scoring from quite a distance out, for a prop. So what’s the secret of Beech’s success?
“This is a really different season for me,” Beech said.
“I announced I was retiring at the end of last season, so I had no intention of playing this season.
“This is like going into extra-time for me and my approach is slightly different.
“I’m worrying less about things like the athletic side of things I once had when I was younger.
“I’ve embraced the fact I’m old now.
“Saturday was a proper physical game and I really enjoyed it.
“When it comes down to the last minute, it’s always amazing because we all like winning games, but it’s much better when it goes to the line.
“It was on the referee’s call at the end.
“Sheffield Tigers gave us a hell of a lot in the scrum and in the open field and our young lads were outstanding.
“Everyone stood up and it was a really good game to be involved in.
“When you look at the season we won promotion, we won a lot of games like that, the nailbiters like the one with Hull Ionians at home and Flyde away when Mike Adlard produced that try saving tackle at the end.
“That spirit, that dog is coming back and it’s lovely to see it back.”
