Playing a free flowing brand of rugby Hull weathered some early pressure from Huddersfield, who scored a try after 11 and a half minutes, to run out convincing winners 49-12.
Huddersfield started well and after making a clean break their centre, Lewis Workman gathered his kick ahead to score a good unconverted try after just seven minutes.
Hull were quickly back into the game with two well struck penalties from off-half Reece Dean after 14 and 17 minutes to lead 6 – 5. At this stage Huddersfield’s number eight Hammond was yellow carded for a tackle on Hull’s Harrison Astley as he seemed set to score.
Hull looked to take advantage of their numerical superiority and having just failed to score twice in as many minutes Hull kept good field position and a forward drive saw second rower Bill Addy stretch over the line for a try just after the return of Huddersfield’s Hammond. Dean converted to see Hull ahead 13-5 after 28 minutes.
Hull were starting to dominate in the scrums and stole many of Huddersfield’s lineout ball, and after a great run by back rower Moses Nasilasila, Dean was on hand, backing up to score and convert his own try after 35 minutes.
As half-time approached, Hull spun the ball from their own line with virtually every player touching the ball , to see Nasilasila touch down in the right hand corner for a magnificent unconverted try to see Hull lead 25-5 at halftime.
The second half saw Hull in the ascendancy, even though they encountered more resistance in the scrummage area. After just 49 minutes, Hull took advantage of a very good scrum of their own and as it drove forward Nasilasila scored his second try of the game on his debut.
Hull were now running the ball at every opportunity to good effect with players regularly getting over the gain line with Ali Heard in the centre and Will Hall at number eight leading the charge.
This style of rugby and excellent backing up saw Hull score three more tries. Firstly winger Astley went over after 62 minutes, then prop Jamie Major after 66 minutes and substitute second row forward Kim Russell after 79 minutes. All the tries were converted by Dean.
Hull’s adventurous style of play and great backing up saw them win 49-12 despite failing to convert at least four other try scoring opportunities. A very good performance which was a tribute to an all-round team effort.
