Week 1 League Preview

Opening Fixtures for Saturday, 2 September

  • Fylde v Sheffield Tigers
  • Huddersfield v Hull Ionians
  • Lymm v Wharfedale
  • Otley v Hull RUFC
  • Rotherham v Billingham
  • Sheffield v Leeds Tykes
  • Tynedale v Preston Grasshoppers

Hull RUFC have played against all of these clubs at some time and it is good to be seeing them all again this season. Particularly in the case of Billingham who have been knocking at the promotion door in the past few seasons without getting let in. Last season they did it in fine style by clinching promotion as early as 18 February. This season they have been thrown in at the deep end with their opening game being a visit to the powerful Rotherham Titans. A daunting task indeed.

There are nine Yorkshire clubs in N2N, including ourselves, in the division this season.  This means we can all look forward to 16 mouth-watering County derbies, prominent of which for us are the two clashes with our close neighbours Hull Ionians on 9 September at Chants Ave and 16 December at Brantingham Park. The opening day sees three such clashes, Otley v Hull, Huddersfield v Hull Ionians and Sheffield v Leeds Tykes.

The other five clubs comprise two from Lancashire, one from Cheshire and one each from Northumberland and Durham. Our longest away trips are to Fylde, Preston, Tynedale and Billingham. This is a far cry from last season when we faced long journeys to Plymouth, CInderford, Taunton, and several in the London area.

Every week in the coming season I will be presenting a League Round-Up which will review the previous weeks results and take a look at who are playing who on match day. I hope you all will enjoy reading them as I will in compiling them.

Ferensian.
