The latest chapter in the history between Hull RUFC and Ionians takes place tomorrow at Chants Ave (2pm kick-off). For Hull, a win and they win the league and promotion to National League 1 for the first time ever. Ionians will want nothing better than to come to Chants Ave and do all they can to spoil any potential promotion party. Back row forward Laurence Cowen used to play for the I’s and he knows they might try and unsettle the home team, but he and the rest of the squad will be prepared for the penultimate challenge of the season.
“We expect Ionians to be massively up for this game,”Cowen said.
“They’ve been sat at sixth for the last few months with no way up or down for a long time, but still manage to get up for some decent performances.
“So for a local derby with the chance to spoil our party, I think we’ll see Ionians at their best, throwing everything they have at us!
“They have some players who we know will try to wind us up, and we have some players who in the past would have risen to it.
“But if you look at our track record since Christmas, and even before, we’ve become a lot more professional, kept our heads, and in the end got the results with much fewer penalties conceded.
“I wouldn’t say that’s the experienced players keeping everyone calm.
“I feel its more the team as a whole realising what we have a chance of doing, what’s at stake, and just getting on with it and doing their jobs.”
