Gary Pearce is experienced enough in rugby to know that being top of the table half way through the season counts for very little, no matter what the level of rugby might be. Hull travel to Sheffield Tigers this weekend in pole position and he expects nothing less than a tough encounter. But if his players play to the high standards they have set this season already, then Sheffield are going to have to be at their best to get the win.
“Nobody lies down in this league and if you’re not on your game, you’ll get beat,” Pearce said.
“Simply as that and that’s how it should be in a decent league like this.
“Sheffield are mid-table at the moment which shows that they probably win more at home than away.
“Sheffield have a dangerous back division and they have some dangerous players. They will be full of heart and spirit.
“They know we’re top of the table and they will raise their game which is why we are expecting a tough game.
“We don’t mind playing away from home and we are a very nuggety side and if they are better than us, then fair play to them.
“They are going to have to be on their mettle and better than they have been to beat us.
“Hopefully we’ll have a few players back but the ones who came in at a critical time for us as a club, they have done unbelievably well and they have shown why they should be playing in National 2 North.”
