When the season started, few would have expected the league table to look the way it does on the eve of Christmas. Hull top the table with 12 wins from 14 and while many outside of the east Riding would have expected the Chants Ave side to be top of the tree, hooker Ali Thompson believes the team deserves to be the Christmas number one. Thompson is delighted to have played a part in helping his team rise to the top and his focus now switches to the first game of 2022 when Stourbridge visit Hull on January 8.
“Winning 12 of our 14 games, nobody had that down for us,” Thompson said.
“Top of the table at the end of 2021 is unbelievable.
“We’re really pleased for the boys who have put in a lot of hard graft in a lot of months for this result to happen.
“We’ll start 2022 by trying to rectify the result at Stourbridge when we lost so that’s how we want to start the new year.
“I’m very happy to help Hull win last weekend’s derby.
“We didn’t play well in the second half, we know that, but we dominated the first half and did what we needed to do after half-time.
“The result is always remembered, the performances not so much.
“Ionians put out a bit of the history before the game saying they had won 11 derbies and we had won four.
“So to win this derby was nice.”
