Norman Angell’s league round-up

Last Saturday was a blank day for league fixtures and the only game played was a catch-up game where Kirkby Lonsdale won at Vale of Lune by 22-29. This was to make up for a game on 22 September between the two clubs which had to be abandoned after 30 minutes because of a serious injury to one of the players.

The fixtures played on 29 September saw a cracking match played at Blaydon where the league leaders won a thrilling game against Harrogate by 42-36. Elsewhere, Ilkley had a comfortable home win over Vale of Lune by 29-5; our side won a hard-fought victory at Kendal by 24-5 and today’s visitors defeated Alnwick as mentioned above.  Another very close game was at Rossendale where the home side inflicted the first defeat of the season on Billingham by 26-23 meaning that there are no undeafeated sides in the division. In the Cheshire derby at Wilmslow a very high-scoring game saw lymm take the honours by 59-31 and finally, Wirral had a very good home win over Sandal by 42-19.

All this means that the top three sides are Blaydon on 22 points with Hull second and Billingham third, both on 20 points. Down in the nether regions the bottom side are Vale of Lune with just 2 points and without a win, Wilmslow are thirteenth with 5 points just below Kendal with 8.

Today’s fixtures bring up some very interesting clashes and my three to watch are Billingham v Wirral where third meet sixth; Lymm v Kendal where eleventh meet twelfth and  Sandal v Blaydon where eighth meet first.  Sandal have proved tough opponents at home so far and they may (hopefully!!) spring a surprise on the Geordies.
