Hull notched up over fifty points for the second time in three days as they followed up their resounding quarter final Yorkshire Cup victory with another display full of aggressive high energy rugby.
Doncaster’s hopes of gaining a bonus point evaporated long before halftime as Hull took full advantage of the perfect conditions.
Doncaster started brightly and were quick to establish good field position close to the Hull line after just seven minutes but when they failed to score Hull broke away with a ninety yard move which only ended when the ball went lose Hull maintained their pressure and after just twelve minutes scrumhalf Harvey Harding strolled through a gap to register Hull’s first try which off half Tyler Price duly converted..
Doncaster were still in the game at this stage and after eighteen minutes they engineered an effective catch and drive which was followed by some good handling to see their full back Wright go in for an unconverted try to close the gap to two points. That was the signal for a period of play by Hull that saw them score four tries without reply and effectively end the game as a contest.
After twenty two minutes Hull worked a copybook catch and drive from a lineout which saw captain and hooker Tom Price touching down for a try converted by Tyler Price. Just three minutes later Hull released the ball to their backs and winger Tomasi Tanumi side stepped his way to a good try near the fifteen yard line which Tyler Price converted.
With Hull now starting to dominate the set pieces, gaps were opening up in the Doncaster defences and after thirty three minutes Hull’s forwards set up good field position following a lineout to give Harvey Harding the space to scamper over for another try converted by Tyler Price.
Hull’s best move of the half , four minutes later saw them break out from deep in their own half and a seventy yard move ended with full back Lee Birch breaking through three tackles to score an unconverted try to see Hull go in at the break 31-5 leaders.
The second half saw Hull add to their lead after two minutes when a forward drive was illegally halted as it surged towards the line for a penalty try converted by Tyler Price.Almost immediately Hull were back on the attack and another fine handling move gave winger Tomasi Tanumi all the room he needed to sidestep his way over for a try converted by Tyler Price.
Hull’s forwards had laid the foundations for this victory and it was no surprise when back five forward Liam Regardsoe popped up to grab a well earned try again converted by Price.
As the game went into the last quarter Hull’s Thursday evening exertions may have taken their toll as Doncaster scored a fine breakaway try through Steve Bottomley.Hull’s final try followed a long range chase after a kick through and second rower Sean Mc Donald was first to the ball and he picked up and passed to Harvey Harding for him to score his third try of the afternoon to see Hull reach fifty nine points following Price’s conversion. A late try for Doncaster was fitting reward for their never say die attitude but Hull now look forward to next Sartudays Yorkshire Cup semi final at Harrogate with confidence.
